October is spooky season, where vampires, zombies, and cat people come out to play. Lots of people live for Halloween and look forward to the annual horror festival. Unfortunately, I am a child. I don’t like horror – never have, never will.
However, I wanted to play some of the right games to get back in the spirit of the season, so I found some less intimidating options. They are just games type Gives you a chill or takes place in a beautiful fall setting, perfect for concocting your inner pumpkin spice. They are also critically acclaimed games that will at least give you something to talk about with your friends, even if you don’t like them. Best of all, they won’t keep you at night or make the game nearly unplayable because you’re afraid to turn the corner.
Here are some options for those who don’t like horror. Alternatively, if you’re not a nerd, you can check out our recommendations for the best horror games of all time instead.
Luigi’s Mansion 3
Luigi’s Mansion 3 replace the typical haunted mansion with a haunted hotel. Luigi, Mario and Princess Peach accept an invitation to a luxury resort, not realizing that it is actually a place of supernatural activity. Our hero Luigi wakes up from a nap in his hotel room to find everyone has disappeared and the hotel is overrun by ghosts. He and his trusty ghost dog Polterpup must clean up the hotel’s spooky lair and save his brother and friends from the vengeful King Boo.
Luigi’s Mansion fits the Halloween theme with its haunted vibe – think Casper the Friendly Ghost. It’s not meant to terrify players as much as it is to tell a ghostly happening story. Plus, its animated graphics lighten the blow when it comes to creepy. It’s easier to reduce any ghosting when a balloon-nosed cartoon plumber is running around vacuuming the speckled-bodied ghosts. There is no eerie realistic rotting skin, creepy soundtracks or blood baths to be seen in these haunted halls.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 available on Nintendo Switch. Is different Luigi’s Mansion The game is also a good choice for Halloween, but Luigi’s Mansion 3 is one of the most modern. As the Digital Trends review said, “Explore all the different rooms with all the carefully added details and clever ghost encounters that have a bigger impact than previous games. this”.
Little Nightmare 2 takes place in a dark, messy universe that is strangely similar to our own. Mono, a boy with a paper bag on his head, finds himself trapped in a world that has been distorted by a mysterious signal tower. He meets Six, the little girl in a yellow raincoat from little nightmare, and the two work together to uncover the secrets of the tower and save Six from her fate.
This prequel for Little nightmare scare the player unsettlingly, bubbling up to the bottom of your stomach in some way. Its sombre, sombre setting and silent protagonists moving about a dangerous area of ghostly inhabitants stir up a sense of insecurity. I’ve kept it on this list because of how its suspenseful story convinced me to keep walking through confusing corridors, even though I found it scarier than anything I’ve ever done.
Enter this realm of nightmares on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Google Stadia. Also you can play Very little nightmare on mobile, change the gameplay and graphics for an easier side-adventure.
Famicom Detective Club
Famicom Detective Club is a series, not just a title. Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir introduces an amnesiac protagonist who discovers that he is a detective solving a murder case involving the wealthy Ayashiro family. On the other hand, Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Behind starring the same protagonist before the events of The missing heir. He investigates the murder of a schoolgirl along with her best friend and the leader of the Detective Club, Ayumi Tachibana.
Both games are considered murder mystery visual novels. They’re not made for horror in a way that causes an uncomfortable shiver like some of the other titles on this list. However, they still involve killing and the dead in a way that can entertain a late night playthrough. The murders also involve some ghost stories from urban lore, in keeping with the Halloween spirit. Overall, it checks out most of the elements of a scary story while keeping it light.
Both Famicom Detective Club The game is available on Nintendo Switch. You can buy one in advance to try out the games, or buy the entire bundle upfront for a bit cheaper than buying each individually.
The Remains of Edith Finch takes place through the eyes of Edith Finch, the last living member of the Finch family. Edith explores the abandoned Finch mansion to find out why she’s the only one left. It’s basically a collection of short stories about each member of the Finch family. You play through each Finch’s life through various interactive means until they die untimely.
Edith Finch had a rainy night vibe with it. Edith doesn’t seem to be in any immediate, bloody danger, but she’s investigating her ghostly clan curse. The story explores themes of what humans leave behind, but in a startling way, reminds us that life is fleeting and our actions have consequences. As Creative Director Ian Dallas told Digital Trends, “What we were really interested in was discovering a moment that felt so beautiful, but also a little unsettling.”
Find out exactly what’s left of Edith Finch on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and iOS.
Lost in random
Lost in random tells the story of a sister’s quest to save their siblings from a troubled fairy tale. In the Random Kingdom, children roll a miraculous death on their twelfth birthday to decide where they live for the rest of their lives. Odd rolls a number six, which means a life of luxury in the Queen’s Castle. However, a year later, her sister Even received a signal that Odd might be in danger. Even met a sentient dead man named Dicey and the two battled through different districts to save Odd.
It’s a Tim Burton adventure with sly 3D characters, dreamy setting, and mean-looking monsters. Lost in random there might be a spooky premise with the kidnapped sister and all, but it’s also a touching story if it doesn’t plunge it into total nightmare territory. Even promotional materials like the trailer’s scream storybook come to life. Digital Trends reviewers mentioned some cons, but it succeeded in entertaining them with well-developed (if verbose) characters and a gripping mystery.
Lost in random on Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, PS4 and PS5.

Doki Doki . Literature Club
Doki Doki . Literature Club It may seem like a naive high school dating simulator, but it’s actually a psychological horror game that sabotages the genre.
