Age of Empires IV will play like classic Age of Empires II – After all, there’s no point in fixing what’s not broken. Instead, creative director Adam Isgreen says the team is hoping Modernize the game instead of adding new layers of complexity.
“In general, the longer a genre lasts, the more games responsible for developing it tend to make it more complicated,” Isgreen said. “With Age of Empires IV, the important thing for us was, ‘Okay, how do we get back out of that?’ We don’t want to take on all the complexity we see in today’s RTS games. This is a new beginning for us. We wanted to modernize the series, and that meant we were going to do things differently.”
In fact, large parts of the game can feel very familiar:
“Everybody said, ‘Don’t touch the battle. Don’t. Please don’t change it! ‘ So we were like, ‘OK, got the message,’ explains Isgreen. “The feeling and flow of Age of Empires II completely central, so we decided to build everything else around it. Its core is untouchable to the community – its time to kill, its flow, its speed, all of which are very important to the game. We won’t mess with that. “
In addition to the same – but refreshed – gameplay, you’ll also find four historical campaigns that take a closer look at different storylines and characters. There is still a lot of secrecy surrounding the campaigns, but it looks like they will become one of the main attractions of the campaign. Age of Empires IV.

No good Age of Empires game is complete without a strong multiplayer offering, and the upcoming installment is no different. The game will fully support both multiplayer PVP and PVE modes, allowing you to join up with seven friends to tackle a bit of RTS chaos. You’ll also be able to see if you want to sit back and relax while your friends work it out.
