With the release of Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 next month, AMD offers a Videos on YouTube show some graphics features enabled in the game. If this feature is anything to go by, PC gamers with AMD graphics cards can expect a significant performance boost using AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR).
AMD FSR is a competitor to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Supersampling (DLSS) and uses reconstruction to render the scene at a lower resolution and upscale it to higher fidelity. The result is a big boost to frame rates. In the case of Far Cry 6, AMD showed the game running from 61 to 63 fps (fps) with FSR turned off and from 87 to 90 fps with FSR enabled. That represents a 46% increase in performance.
Unfortunately, there is one big caveat to mention. AMD has not shown specifications of the PC footage it has recorded. We also don’t know what graphics settings were used. The only thing we can confirm is that the frame rate was shot at 60fps and that the video itself was uploaded in 4K, meaning the PC could have recorded raw 4K footage. This suggests that AMD will probably use one of its high-end GPUs like the Radeon RX 6800 XT.
Since this is an AMD-sponsored title, it’s clear that Ubisoft has made a bunch of optimizations for AMD CPUs and GPUs. The rest of the video shows off super high resolution textures and supports widescreen resolutions at 60fps. The footage also shows ray tracing effects such as shadows and reflections, although the reflections are hybrid (ray-tracing combined with traditional screen-spatial reflections).
These very early performance numbers (albeit in favor of AMD) give us a glimpse of what PC gamers can expect, especially those lucky enough to get their hands on high-end graphics cards. newer AMD graphics. Considering the game is optimized for AMD hardware, that also means smoother performance on current generation consoles. Benjamin Hall, world director of Far Cry 6, mentioned in a Reddit AMA that the game will run fine on latest generation hardware. Hopefully this means that the much more powerful PS5 and Xbox Series S/X consoles will have no problem running at high resolutions or high frame rates.
Far Cry 6 is set to release on October 7 for all latest and current generation consoles, PC, Amazon Luna, and Google Stadia.
