Battlefield 2042The mysterious Danger Zone mode has finally been revealed. The objective-based mode throws multiple teams of four players onto a map and task them with collecting hard drives from crashed satellites. The goal is to unpack as many drives as possible without dying to earn credits.
There is a narrative dynamic behind this mode. In Battlefield 2042 According to legend, a worldwide blackout event takes place in the year 2040, destroying 70% of the satellites. Nations began sending temporary low-orbit satellites to enemy territories to collect data. Players control teams of No-Pats, the game’s term for soldiers, who begin retrieving data on downed satellites.
The danger zone puts players in teams of four. Players begin a round by choosing their loaded item during the equip phase. Squad can’t have duplicate specialists, so players need to coordinate a bit here. Players will also choose a specific tactical upgrade for the Danger Zone in this mode.
Interestingly, the Danger Zone uses its own currency called Dark Market Credits. Extracting the drive will give the player more credits, which can be used during the equip phase. It’s a bit like the economy shooter mechanics seen in games like Valuable substance, despite only having one buy in a match.
After that, all teams will go to war and start hunting for satellites. An information scanner helps players find the approximate location of downed satellites, so at least one team member should have one. When a satellite is found, the player will see the occupying forces defending it, which appear to be AI bots. Storms can also appear on the map, which means players need to survive against humans, bots, and the environment. More valuable satellites land on the map midway through the match.
The player has two chances to decompress the hard drive. Halfway through the map, a random location is chosen as the mining point. Players will have a limited window to hop on board and leave, while fighting bots. The second extraction opens near the end of a round.
If a team wipes out without unpacking, they lose everything. If a team member is still alive, the team will keep what they have collected. Players can revive each other using the enhanced Ascent, which is scattered across the map. Gadgets can also be purchased during the equip phase.
Matches include a total of 32 players on PC, Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5, and 24 players on Xbox One and PS4. The mode uses all maps included in All Out Warfare mode.
Hazard Zone is a start to the Battlefield series. While the franchise is no stranger to goal-based modes, the extraction angle is a whole new concept. The idea of using credits to build a download is also very new, suitable for recent hits like Valuable substance and Apex Legends‘Arena mode. True to the developer’s word, it’s definitely not a battle royale mode.
Battlefield 2042 launches November 19 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
