The best processor in 2020 at a glance
Best processor for the buck: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
AMD’s Ryzen 5000-series microprocessors are currently prevalent and for good reason. The Ryzen 5000 is impressive, but the range is still nascent, with the cheapest processor priced at $ 300 (if you can find one in stock). For about $ 200, you can choose the last-gen 3600, which still has six cores and 12 threads with a base speed of 3.6 GHz. Alternatively, you can find 3600 available at most major retailers.
The only other option around $ 200 is Intel’s i5-10400. The 3600 not only easily beats the 10400 in the productivity benchmarks, but it also makes for a fair fight in gaming. You can also overclock the 3600 to close the gaming gap, and you’ll save on one motherboard. Unlike Intel, AMD supports overclocking on its mid-range B-series chipset.
Best budget processor: Intel Core i3-10100
With prices between $ 100 and $ 150, our suitable recommendation is the Ryzen 3 3300X. It’s a quad-core chip that can accelerate up to 4.3 GHz, and it even comes with an included cooler. However, the 3300X, like many Ryzen processors, is out of stock at most retailers. Instead, we recommend the Core i3-10100.
Like the 3300X, the 10100 is a quad-core processor that can accelerate up to 4.3 GHz. As for performance, the 10100 surpasses the 3300X in most productivity standards. However, that’s true for all third-generation Ryzen chips. The 10100 is still far from being equipped to handle any serious 3D rendering or modeling, but at least it could cause a fight.
The good news comes in the gaming realm, as the 10100 shows negligible performance differences between similarly priced chips. There is a difference, with Intel’s 9th and 10th generation chips behind the Ryzen 5000. However, the difference is not nearly as pronounced in gaming as it is in productivity benchmarks, especially in higher resolution.
Best mid-range processor: Intel Core i5-10600K
AMD is always the better choice for the budget, but in a weird way we would really recommend an Intel processor in this position. From gaming to light productivity, the i5-10600K is a far superior chip. It boasts six cores and 12 threads with a base frequency of 4.1 GHz. However, the 10th generation Intel processors are known for just how well overclocked they are. This “K” type processor is unlocked, meaning you can overclock it with compatible motherboard. With a little tweaking, the 10600K can hit 5GHz just like its bigger, worse cousin: the i9-10900K.
The 10600K is likely to be part of the last generation as well, so the price will drop. You can find 10600K available at most online retailers for around $ 260. AMD’s competing chip, the Ryzen 5 5600X, is a bit more expensive at around $ 300. It has the same number of cores as the 10600K, but AMD’s chips Win in the game benchmarks, especially at lower resolutions. However, you shouldn’t discount the 10600K overclock, which can easily close the gap with the 5600X when gaming, closer to Ryzen 7 5800X performance.
It is a matter of time. AMD’s 5000 series processors are out of stock at most retailers, and Intel is expected to reveal its 11th generation desktop platform soon. If you need a processor for around $ 250 now, the 10600K is the best option. Best processor for enthusiasts: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X

When it comes to productivity tasks, the 5800X is definitely an upgrade from the 5600X. However, the 5800X is only $ 100 less than the top 5900X, and that processor wins the day in productivity.
However, that doesn’t make the 5800X an unnecessary processor. If you’re primarily interested in gaming and need a bit of productivity – like encoding gaming footage or editing video in Premiere – the 5800X is the perfect balance. The 5900X is great for productivity while playing side games. The 5800X is perfect for just the opposite.
The processor itself, the 5800X comes with eight cores and 16 threads with a base clock of 3.8GHz. It can go as high as 4.7 GHz, just below 5 GHz (AMD will get there someday). While it’s too much for gaming and not enough for serious productivity, very few processors manage both at a reasonable price point, making it the ideal choice in some situations.

Best high-end processor: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
Two chips are at the top of AMD’s current lineup: the 5900X and the 5950X. The 5950X is definitely a more powerful processor, sporting 16 cores and 32 threads compared to the 5900X’s 12 cores and 24 threads. The 5950X is also $ 250 more expensive, and in the majority of apps it’s a waste.

The 3990X shines in core-demanding tasks, such as rendering dense visual effects or editing video. Located between the consumer and professional spaces, the 3990X is the perfect processor for professionals who need the best performance but don’t have the money to invest in server-grade hardware.
However, the price is high, almost 4,000 dollars. However, it’s tens of thousands of dollars lower than Intel’s 50+ core services. If you don’t need a lot of cores, you can always buy the 32-core AMD Threadripper 3970X for half the price (and still beat less competitive processors).
