Jesse McCree, the six pack cowboy of Overwatch voiced by Matt Mercer, will have a new name after a posted on the game’s Twitter page. Developer Blizzard’s decision comes after the character’s real name, a former game designer at the studio, was fired by the company.
“As we continue to discuss how we best live our values and demonstrate our commitment to creating a game world that reflects them,” Blizzard said in a statement. The new name for the hero has yet to be announced.

The statement also announced that a narration in the game’s story will also be delayed, as it will focus primarily on McCree. Instead, Blizzard will roll out a new free map for all Overwatch this September. Jesse McCree, a former Blizzard employee, is a developer who worked on expansions for World of Warcraft, as Diablo 3 and Diablo 4. His departure from Blizzard came earlier this month after a report from Kotaku shows him being included in an annual BlizzCon gathering called the “Cosby Suite,” along with World of Warcraft Alex Afrasiabi.
Afrasiabi has been named in a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard of the State of California, alleging that Afrasiabi “engaged in[d] flagrant sexual harassment with little or no consequence” while he was employed by Blizzard. Many of these interactions took place within the Cosby Suite, where “Afrasiabi is known to harass women.”
