Every Souls game starts out the same way: You create your character, choose a class, and go through a short tutorial where you’re given the most basic explanation of how the game works. You can get a few items, but nothing substantial. Instead of ending with any sense of empowerment, like most games tend to do in their openings, Souls games prefer to end their tutorials with a boss encounter that you cannot win. These tutorial bosses only get harder from game to game as players get more used to Soul-style combat, but even those who’ve played every game since the soul of the devil will be find Elden Ring’s The tutorial boss, Grafted Scion, is nearly impossible to take down on the first try.
While every instructor boss is meant to slap you at least the first time around, there’s always something special for those who can take the challenge and beat those bosses. They don’t usually change the game much, but are a nice bonus for defeating a challenging enemy with essentially no tools at your disposal. What makes Elden RingThe boss’s tutorial is a bit more difficult, aside from the boss himself, it’s not a horribly fast boss to try. You’ll need to start the game all over again, with minutes between runs that could easily end in failure in just a few seconds. If you’re wondering if it’s possible to beat the tutorial boss in Elden RingWe have pondered and come up with the answer.
FromSoftware only really has one case where you’re in a boss battle that you have absolutely no chance of winning, and that’s the first Seattle encounter in the series. Dark souls. Also, whenever a boss appears with its name and health bar, you have the ability to kill it. It can take a long time and requires near-perfect levels of play, but it maybe done. The same is true for the grafted Scion. Even though you’re coming to this ferocious boss with just basic starter gear and no items or potions, you can still win.
If you’ve died in defeating this first boss to see what rewards await you, there are a few tricks you can learn to help you. That being said, there’s really not much you can do but shorten your time and be patient. Outside of your classroom, you can’t basically prepare for this fight.
In terms of class, Samurai is probably the best for this fight. It comes with a nice looking katana, plus a total of 30 arrows to do some ranged attacks. As for attacks, this multi-limb monster is difficult to read. It will swing wildly at you with its two blades, but watch out for the final thrust after a number of swipes. Depending on where you are, it can choose to swipe further or backward.
If you are within range, Scion can jump high in the air for downward thrust. This is a good chance to dodge the impact and take a single counter attack before it heals. It can also perform a ground attack without jumping, which is harder to read but also leaves momentarily open.
Again, you have no regeneration in this fight, so you can actually make one or probably total two mistakes. The best advice we can give if you really want to do this is to play patiently, attack only when you know for sure it’s safe and ready for lots of reboots.
So what awaits you after finally defeating the hardest tutorial boss in any Souls game? Thankfully, a few things, but they may not be as great as you expect. The first is a Golden Beast Crest Shield. This is a Greatshield which is a beast, takes 100% physical damage and 50% magic, but is super heavy and requires 24 Power to use. That makes it pretty much useless for the first few hours of the game, no matter what class you start with.
You’ll also get the Decorative Straight Sword, which you can actually take advantage of much faster. It only requires 10 Strength and 14 Dexterity to use, scaling with Dexterity to deal damage, so it would be perfect for a Samurai class.
After winning, you will progress a little further into the area until you hit a cliff where the cutscene plays and you are forced to fall to your death so the game can continue, similar to how in the soul of the devil you were killed by the Dragon God if you defeated the Demon Vanguard.
If you’re interested in this device, but not in the crazy challenge of defeating the tutorial boss, you can also get both parts much easier later on. Without spoiling as much as possible, a later area of the game will have a Place of Grace that you can rest at called Four Belfries. If you come here and find a statue you can use the Imbued Sword Key item to open, which you can enter and be taken to an arena where you will fight this boss again. The obvious advantage now is, you’ve leveled up, learned how to actually play, can heal and have multiple tries without having to start the whole game all over again. As long as you have one of these keys on you, you can rest easy knowing you’ll have a sweet revenge against this tormented guide boss.
