While physical media will almost certainly be around for the next few years, the video game industry has made significant strides towards an all-digital future. But beyond that, the concept of subscription services – especially in the world of video games – has come to the fore in recent years. While services like Xbox Game Pass and to a lesser extent PlayStation Now are leading the charge, there are other options you may be less familiar with.
One example is EA Play, the video game subscription service of publisher Electronic Arts. EA has fallen short of a fan-favorite publisher over the years, but there’s no denying the quality of the games under the company. Therefore, you might consider subscribing to EA Play. Before you do, you should have all the information you need to make an informed decision, and that’s where we come in. Here’s everything you need to know about EA Play.
Like PS Now and Xbox Game Pass, EA Play is a subscription service available on multiple platforms. The service gives you access to a huge library of EA games, plus trials and early access to new releases, and even discounts on digital purchases. This service is great for players who want to play EA games without paying a lot of money. The list of games is quite varied, giving you a wide range of newer and older titles across generations.
We’ll go into the list of games below, but suffice it to say that almost every notable EA release from the last few generations is available on the service. This subscription model has become incredibly popular, as it eliminates the need to spend $60 on a brand new game. Granted, you won’t technically own these titles, and if your membership expires, you’ll lose access to the games. But for many people, this is not a big deal because most just want to play games at an affordable price.
Not only does the service give you access to EA’s “Vault” in games, but you also get 10% off new EA titles for purchase. This also includes DLC.
If you’re still interested in service, your next concern is probably cost. Fortunately, it’s one of the less expensive services, making it easier for you to make a decision. There are two plans available. One is $5 per month or $30 annually. Of course, if you pay $30 upfront, that’s a 50% savings compared to if you pay monthly. Either way, it’s easier to justify buying $30 to get access to more games than paying $60 for one.
Of course, the other major factor you should consider – aside from cost – is the list of games available through EA Play. We will not list all of them here – there are too many – but there are some notable inclusions that we will note. The great thing is that you can use EA Play to download the most recent annual sports games like Madden NFL, NHL and FIFA. They don’t have days and months, but if you wait a few months, they’ll be playable at no extra cost. For example, as of July you can play all the most recent EA Sports titles through the service.
In addition, here are some notable games available through EA Play:
- Battlefield DRAW
- Battlefield: Bad Company 2
- Dead space
- Dragon Age: Inquisition
- EA Sports UFC 3
- FIFA 21
- Block effect
- The edge of the mirror
- Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered
- NHL 21
- Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville
- Ice skating 3
- Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
- Star Wars: The Squad
- The Sims 4
- Titanfall 2
Remember there are dozens of others, and more will be added as time goes on.
EA Play is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam and Origin.
One major factor that has boosted EA Play’s subscriber numbers is that it’s included with Xbox Game Pass for PC and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (but not the regular Xbox Game Pass for consoles). So if you’re an Xbox player, you might already have access to all of these EA Play titles at no extra cost. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about PlayStation players. And since many of these games are for more powerful hardware, the service isn’t available on the Nintendo Switch because the system simply can’t run the majority of games on EA Play.
As a final note, keep in mind that game selection varies slightly between platforms, so check out the full list on EA Play website.
In addition to discounts and a huge library of games to choose from, EA Play has other perks. By becoming a member, you gain access to exclusive bonuses and, as EA refers to it, “members-only content”. It also offers members a 10-hour trial of certain new games at launch. The beauty of this perk is that you get access before the game officially launches, and your progress will continue if you buy the full version.
Additionally, EA Play Pro, available for PC only, gives you access to premium versions of all current games, often featuring season passes and additional DLC. Better yet, this gives you access to all the new releases and costs $15 per month or $100 annually. EA Play Pro is not available for consoles at this time.
