If you don’t know anything about running speed, their most basic rule is that they run fast. Players finish the game at breakneck speed and in Elden RingIn this case, they reduced the game’s 80 hours of playtime to less than you would spend watching cartoons. But now, Elden RingThe speed run scene itself is moving too fast for the player to keep up with.
One runner, Mitcriz, understands that better than anyone else.
Mithriz was also the one who ran Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice blindfolded in AGDQ 2022, and at the time he told me he wanted to be number one Elden Ring speedrunner – and for a while, he was. I spoke to him recently, after he beat the match at 12:32, a new world record. In the middle of our conversation, that record was broken by another speedrunner, Distortion2.
At the time of writing, just three days after our interview, that record has gone up in smoke thanks to a new strategy that allowed Mitcriz to beat the game in 9:40. Then Distortion2 will break that time by beating the game in 8:56. By the time you’re reading it, that recording will most likely be considered slow, because, as Orchriz told me, Elden RingThe speedrunning community’s simply won’t stop improving.
Before you did this run, you had another amazing run that you couldn’t count because a minute of it wasn’t recorded. What was it then?
It was 18:25, which is way back before we found these big zippers, so, I don’t know, a week or so ago.
So mega zips have been discovered and now you’ve reached the number 13. What is a big zip?
That’s good. First, to explain what a zip is: You block and then, 2.1 seconds later, you move forward for a specific number of frames, and the game just teleports you forward at super speed because some reason. We don’t know what, but that’s what will happen.
For a mega zip you do that, but you also do the second kind of perfect framing but not quite the input of walking forward, and then the distance only goes 10x as far . This leaves us far enough away from the Ashes Capital, the final area of the game, for it to de-load that area. But the bosses keep loading up, so they just fall to their death.
So how was that discovered?
Mega zips were found just by someone playing around. I believe it’s Seeker who is just playing with macros and different things, or he might just be doing it by hand, I’m not sure. But he had a very long zip, so he went back to see how that happened and found that he could go an extra ton if he did this.
We already know that bosses will slip and fall if you can get far enough because we did it with the Pegasus cheat or glitch where you can make your horse fly.
Yeah, the game is broken, the game is very broken. So once we have that distance, it just puts two and two together.
Are super large zippers and buckles super accurate?
Yes, they have perfect frames or perfect dual frames, depending on how you count it. Technically that’s the perfect release timeframe, but to do that, you try to time the input perfectly.
So you went from 18:25 to sub-13. How far can this go? How fast do you think? Elden Ring can be beat, ideal?
Well, I can tell you five seconds ago it could have gone as low as 12:13 because Distortion2 just regained the world record!
I’m so sorry!
No, all is well, this is what is expected to happen. This is the joy of speed. As any speed racer will tell you, the goal is to set a world record, never to hold a world record. Because it was an impossible mission, no world record would stand until the end of time.
So how was the community in the first few weeks of the game, because it’s still so nascent?
All cooperate. It’s everyone sharing everything, everyone getting excited about each new record being announced, right? It’s really unbelievable. There’s a certain stigma against the Souls community as being a generic “oh, you know, well done” or “this isn’t true unless you do it without a summons” and blah blah blah.
The speedrunning community is the exact opposite of that. It was like, okay, how can we all find new things and share them with each other and elevate everyone? Because that both makes speed running more enjoyable, and makes it more competitive. It just helps everyone.
How Elden Ringcommunity of right now compare with Sekiroof the community now?
It is very similar. Elden Ringa lot bigger because it’s a popular game, but it still feels the same because so many of the games are the same. Most people who run Sekiro are also in Elden Ring community and also doing Elden Ring speed.
Do you see Elden Ring community gets bigger as it goes on?
I think it will stabilize within maybe two weeks, a month, maybe two or three months depending on how much we keep finding. But I think once things get in the way of trying to emit another second or two here or there, I think interest will slowly fade over time.
I think it’s just the natural way of things, that even though there are new things to be found, everyone wants to do new things and it’s just crazy and so amazing. Once everything is found and it’s just, well, crushed and don’t lose two seconds here, a lot of people won’t have much fun.
“Since five seconds ago, it could have gone as low as 12:13 because Distortion2 just regained the world record!”
How about you? You’re stuck with Sekiro for a long time and seems to have invested in Elden Ring.
Well, I want to continue with it for sure. I want to try other genres. In Sekiro, I feel like I never have time to do anything other than very short categories, any percentage runs, except blindfolded, which is the only time I really have to analyze branch. But Elden Ring, I want to try everything. All memories, or maybe all bosses or all achievements. One of those crazy long ones.
I have to ask, do you think you will play this game blindfolded?
So I have some hope that the movement will be relatively normalized within Elden Ring. It feels a lot not normalized in Elden Ring. It’s very difficult to get the set distance unless you really just want to wait for your stamina to recover and take a turn. Which, going through the landscape in this game, hopefully no enemies will attack you, from now on, I’ll say I don’t plan on doing that. I don’t think I will do that in the future.
But don’t hold me to that. Maybe in the future I’ll change my mind about that, if something is found. Right now, I don’t know how I’m going to navigate the world. I can kill bosses, but I can’t navigate the world.
Okay, last time we talked, you said that your goal is to be the best Elden Ring speedrunner in the world. How’s everything?
You know, despite the fact that the world record has just been taken back, I feel like I’m in contention. Maybe I’m number two, that’s fine, I’ve held world records many times and presented myself as one of the top contenders, and I’m very pleased with what I’ve done. Elden Ring hitherto.
