The first reveal of the March 9 State of Play event was Exoprimal, a new sci-fi shooter from Capcom. Those with knowledge of the little-known game series will recognize that the game serves as the spiritual successor to Dino Crisis, Capcom’s dinosaur-riding survival horror series.
In the reveal trailer for Exoprimalwe see a team of five soldiers in the high-tech field, anthem-like armor fighting a horde of dinosaurs rushing out of the gate. All join forces to confront a giant T. Rex at the end of the trailer.
A press release following its announcement revealed more things about the game. Exoprimal Set in the year 2040, when dinosaurs appear on portals around the world and destroy major cities. In response, a technology company called Aibius Corporation is deploying “Exofighter” to quell these intrusions. There are many Exosuit classes that take on traditional RPG roles such as tank or healer.
Exoprimal’s The top game mode is Dino Survival, where two teams of five fight to complete the objective before the other team. Of course, many different dinosaurs will try their best to hinder the progress of each team. Capcom description Exoprimal is “fully multiplayer focused”, but still promises to weave an engaging story throughout the experience.
Despite its similarities to Dino Crisis, Capcom didn’t mention that series in this announcement. Maybe Dino Crisis is too obscure for Capcom to connect this new game to that franchise. Besides, Exoprimal could be different enough from its cooperative sci-fi shooter that Capcom feels more comfortable leaving it in spiritual legacy territory.
Despite appearing in a PlayStation presentation, it’s not exclusive to those consoles. Exoprimal will be released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2023.
