Fortnite known for its rapid growth, often having anything else new almost every week. Sometimes the map undergoes a major change; other times, new weapons and equipment are added; and even more exciting is when a whole new mode is rolled out. In August 2021, Fortnite received an update that includes a new mode called Impostor. If this sounds familiar to you, it’s because the mode is nearly indistinguishable from the premise of Between us, a social game that took the world by storm in 2020.
One thing Fortnite known for borrowing (or stealing) ideas from other games. But even if you’re not familiar with how this game mode works, you might still want to give it a try because Fortnite does a great job at duplicating formulas. Since the gameplay is so different from what you might be used to in battle royale mode, it’s easy to get confused with how things work.
In this guide, we’ll give you a rundown of how Impostor mode works, and we’ll include some tips and tricks to get you started. Here’s what you need to know about the new Impostor mode in Fortnite.
Immediately, FortniteImpostor mode only seems to be available for a limited time. It seems to be a permanent mode that further expands the overall list of services available in Fortnite. This is great news, as it means you’ll have plenty of time to practice your piloting skills.
The Impostor is a complete formula in which the player must deduce who the real Impostor is. This mode is for up to 10 players and places you in either the Impostor team or the Dealer team. If you’re an Agent, it’s your job to navigate The Bridge while completing missions and keep an eye out for suspicious behavior. On the other hand, the impostors are there to sabotage the Agents and eliminate them one by one.
It is not an action packed mode but focuses more on the social and communication aspects. You will find that the Impostor is a slow-burn incident that usually results in the end if you pay attention.
At the start of a round, you will be assigned an Impersonator or Representative. If you’re an Agent, you’ll want to complete missions while keeping an eye on other players. Always keep an eye on (suspecting) bad behavior. There’s a bit of risk/reward here, as you’ll make progress towards your overall goal if you complete the quest – but having tunnel vision and just focusing on the quest can make you distracted from finding out who the Impostor is.
If you’re an Impostor, you need to carefully remove the Agents while infiltrating – and focusing on separating the Agents is your best bet. Any suspicious behavior, such as following players around or not prioritizing the tasks at hand, can make you look guilty.
When suspicious activity is reported, you enter the discussion phase, where you can begin to accuse or defend yourself. At the start of a match, players may not know who the Impostor is, so it’s important to stick to what you know if you see something worth sharing. Likewise, the Impostor must do his best to push the bug elsewhere to avoid being voted out of the game. Your job here is to make a convincing argument one way or another. And if you’re accused of being an Impostor, your goal is to stay out of the conversation while providing details that might make other players look bad.
Actor: Stick together
It’s a lot harder for the Impostor to eliminate other players if the Agents stick together. Not only does this ensure you can see the backs of others, but it also means that more players can be aware of their surroundings – making it easier to argue persuasively during the discussion phase. There’s a lot that can be inferred when a full team of Agents come together, so we generally recommend against splitting unless absolutely necessary.
Agent: Be specific in the discussion phase
It is not good if you witness suspicious behavior if you cannot communicate that information during the discussion phase. This is your chance to make a compelling argument for or against another player. Sometimes, Impostors will accuse Agents to make them seem less suspicious, so if you know someone innocent, you should make that clear during the discussion phase. Also, don’t immediately get overly defensive if you’re accused. Instead, provide convincing evidence that proves you are innocent. Spamming the conversation will only make you look guilty.
Agent: Prioritize completing missions
You are less likely to be falsely accused if you are truly focused on completing the task. Also, the faster you complete the missions, the quicker you win the match. Just make sure you don’t leave the group because it’s a good way to disqualify yourself!
Impostor: Pretend to complete the quest
The impostors have a more difficult task ahead of them as they have to sabotage missions and eliminate Agents without being seen. If you stay away from Quest objectives, you’ll look more suspicious, so do your best to blend in. If you want to take it a step further, you can even actually complete the Agent quests for the part, though you should only do this if it makes sense. Sometimes, if you do something that seems suspicious, the only way to avoid blame is to complete the Agent Quest, so keep it in your back pocket as a last resort.
Impostors: Self-report to avoid blame
If you’ve isolated a player and made sure no one else is around, you can “self-report” immediately after removing the Agent. Essentially, this means you’ve got the message removed, and it can make you look less guilty. However, you should be wise with your plans, as players who have already been suspected of being Impostors will only be more at fault if they report their disqualification so early. If you are going to self-report, make sure you have a convincing argument to make sure you look innocent.
Impostor: Stay on the same page as your teammates
As an Impostor, you’ll want to make sure your teammates are on the same page during the discussion phase. If your stories don’t match, or if one Impostor doesn’t back up another, it could result in a loss. As the match progresses, more players are eliminated, which means it takes fewer votes to remove a player. That’s why Imposters are required to vote for the same players to reduce their chances of being eliminated from the match. This is especially true if an Imposter player already has a lot of votes – use the discussion time to convince your teammates to vote for the Dealer.
