Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut took the 2020 game we love and improved it for PlayStation 5. If Last of Us 2 does not exist, Ghost of Tsushima is said to have taken home every award at the 2020 game awards, including Game of the Year. We’ll likely see similar results with the nominees in 2021. But, with positive fan feedback, the Sucker Punch team knew they had to deliver something special. . With plenty to unpack, let’s talk about everything new on Iki Island in Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut.
Warning: Small bugs ahead! We will not cover any part of the character building or story development in this article. We’re just covering the new abilities to unlock, the enemies you’ll battle, and the collectibles you’ll find on Iki Island.
Tales of the island of Iki
Again, we won’t be giving any spoilers to the story itself. However, the Iki Island expansion delves into Jin’s past as we learn more about the relationship between Jin and his father, Kazumasa. The eagle sank its talons onto Iki Island with a hallucinogenic poison. Once she has control of Iki, she will keep an eye on Tsushima. If Jin had defeated Khan, he would see the Eagles as the next threat to his home. Otherwise, he will know he cannot win a war on two fronts.
Before the player leaves for Iki Island, Jin makes it clear that Sakai is not welcome there. He will have to cover his insignia if he wears Sakai armor and cannot tell his real name to the residents of Iki. From now on, our main character known as Jin comes from Yarikawa. As the story unfolds, you’ll learn why the Sakai are not welcome on Iki Island.
In addition to the main quest, Iki has many side quests and rumors for players to deal with. However, there are no long stories like Sensei Ishikawa or the storyline of Lady Masako.
Jin was already the deadliest man on Tsushima. Now with some new techniques at his disposal, he’s about to become the most lethal man on Iki Island. Funny enough, it’s Jin’s horse that will learn these new moves.
For our hero Samurai, Jin can learn two new exploration techniques to help him find new locations on the island of Iki. The Wind of Harmony will lead Jin to the animal sanctuaries around Iki. The wind of concentration will show him the way to the Archery Challenge. We’ll look at both of these new versions later.
Jin’s horse will learn Horse Charge right after arriving in Iki. If you have some technical points left over from your previous adventures on Tsushima, you can upgrade the Horse Charge to its full potential. You will find Horse Charge upgrades in the Ghost Techniques tab. So what To be Horse fees?
While riding, press L1 to activate Horse Charge. Jin’s horse will trample towards a group of enemies and trample anyone who stands in their way. Horse Charge is a great way to take out those roaming groups of Mongols and build Jin’s Ghost Pose along the way. Jump down, activate Ghost Stance, and clear any Mongols that haven’t been honed yet.
To further improve your Horse Charge, you can equip Horse Armor, specifically Sakai Horse Armor. Unlock this by completing Kazumasa Sakai’s Legacy, a brand new mythological story unique to Iki Island.
Finally, Jin can unlock the Saddle Bag for his horse, which will store ammo when Jin maxes out his carrying capacity. For example, if Jin is holding the maximum number of arrows possible, any additional arrows he picks up will go to his horse. If you have played Red Dead Redemption 2, you will understand how it works. Of course, your saddlebag can only hold so much, but Jin can transfer ammo to himself by getting close to his horse and pressing Left side on the D-Pad. It’s a great way to re-equip ammo before taking down a Mongol stronghold.
Mythic Tales is one of the coolest features in Ghost of Tsushima. NS Director cut adds two brand new Myths to Iki Island: The Legacy of Kazumasa Sakai and The Legend of Riku’s Black Hand. Of the two, Kazumasa Sakai’s Legacy is worth doing first, as you’ll unlock the Sakai Clan’s Horse Armor for your mount. However, Black Hand Riku will give players a new set of armor.
Scattered around Iki Island are Sakai Banners that function similarly to the Sashimono Banners on Tsushima. However, Jin can use Guiding Wind to get him from banner to banner while on Iki Island. Collecting them will unlock new dyes for your horse armor. Trust us when we say that these dyes are some of the coolest cosmetics in the game.
Hot springs, bamboo strikes and Shinto shrines
Upgrade your health and increase your resolve by finding the new Hot Springs and Bamboo Dam on Iki Island. Well, everyone’s favorite golden bird flew to Iki to guide players to these locations. They can also set the Guiding Wind to take them there if they have unlocked the proper probing techniques.
There is a new Shinto shrine on Iki Island located off the southeast coast, on a small island called Nakajima Island. There you’ll also find the Sakai Clan Banner, lots of items, and Mashira’s Bite, a beautiful set of swords. However, there are no Inari shrines on Iki Island. The foxholes, apparently, originated in Tsushima.
Progressive is the only way we can describe the four new charms added to Iki Island. The first time you encounter an Animal Sanctuary, be it a monkey, deer, or cat, you’ll unlock an enchantment specific to that sanctuary. In your first Archery Challenge you will unlock Charms. Each subsequent exploration and completion will upgrade those enchantments. Let’s go into more detail.
There are eight Archery Challenges scattered throughout Iki. You can use Wind of Concentration to find them all, but don’t get stuck on them. When you discover the first challenge, you will unlock the Charm. This little buff gradually increases your focus by a tenth of a second as you gain upgrade points towards it. Earn points by completing all three Archery Challenge timelines. Hitting all seven targets in seven seconds is no easy task without the right gear and charms for the job.
There are three types of Animal Sanctuary on Iki Island: Deer, Monkey, and Cat. Each category has its own three mecca for players to find and complete. However, each sanctuary plays the same way. Jin would sit with his chimney and play a tune from his childhood to calm and lure the animal. In effect, you’ll move your controller up and down, tracking the song. The only way we can describe it is that Ghost of Flute Hero has no buttons.
Deer Sanctuaries unlock and upgrade the Charm of Subaru’s Might, a Charm that locks onto an enemy’s head after aiming your bow for 3.5 seconds. Time decreases as you complete Deer Sanctuaries and upgrade enchantments.
Monkey Sanctuary unlock and upgrade the Mashira Protection Charm, a Protection Charm that expands your perfect window for six seconds each time you heal. However, the treatment will now take two treatments. Upgrading it will increase the duration.
Cat Sanctuary unlock and upgrade Nekoma’s Hunting Charm, the Invisibility Charm that lets you hurl Kunai at a target 15 meters away in a Chain Assassination. Upgrading this charm will increase the distance to throw Kunai.
There are some new enemies that Jin will encounter on Iki Island. While the mechanics you’ve learned so far will help you deal with these enemies, the way you implement those mechanics will increase your chances of survival.
Magician is the first new enemy Jin will encounter. They are the spirit lieutenants of The Eagle and make other enemies attack relentlessly. While using Shaman magic, enemies will attack Jin on all fronts instead of one or two at once. They are harder to stagger and never give up on the attack. So Jin should prioritize the Mages whenever he hears a chant. Thankfully, killing them isn’t that hard.
Mages are technically spear-wielding enemies and are therefore very weak against Wind Stance. Reach one and hold triangle to launch Typhoon Kick. Then roll towards the Shaman and press square Kill them while they’re still on the ground. The kill window is pretty big, so don’t worry if they look like they’re about to get up. If you have trouble locating the Shaman, enter focus by pressing the trackpad. You will hear the Mages chanting above everything else and be able to pinpoint their exact location.
Multi-weapon enemy New to Iki Island and will put your pose transformation skills to the test. Maybe you will need Wind and Water Stance are unlocked to fight these guys, as they will switch between swords, shields, and spears. Pay attention to the weapon they are using and switch to the necessary pose. Thankfully, the multi-stakeholder Brutes doesn’t exist.
Spear BrutesHowever, that’s how Iki Island has taken down the game’s biggest enemies and made them even more deadly. Using the double-headed Darth Maul, like a spear, these Brutes have a serious punch and are nearly impossible to dodge perfectly. Switch to Moon Stance, and kick them in the face until you break their guard. Their attack can also be interrupted with a favorable kick.
Fight in Ghost of Tsushima are the best battles in the game. The boss battles are both cinematic and hard enough to make the hairs on your neck stand up. In Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut, you can replay all the duels you have previously defeated. When you replay a duel, you are told that it offers a “uniquely challenging experience”. So what does that mean?
Well, it just makes the match harder initially. Your opponents deal more damage, and they take more damage.
In addition to duels, you can replay Mongolian strongholds. Again, you are prompted with the same message and given a new set of bonus challenges than before.
The Hidden Cove . Tournament
Immediately after completing the first few Tales of Iki, you will unlock the Hidden Cove Tournament. Here, Jin will face 4 unique opponents with Bokken Sticks, Japanese wooden swords used for practice. Each opponent fights with a different fighting style and will launch different moves towards Jin that he will have to dodge or dodge. There is no penalty for losing, but you must defeat the first three opponents before facing the fourth and final enemy.
However, upon defeating the fourth opponent, he will become a supplier known as the Crimson Dye Merchant.
