Jin may be willing to overcome many Mongols to save his home from invaders, even venturing to the new island of Iki in the expansion included in Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut, but he’s not quite a cold-blooded killer. He has a sensitive side that shows up not only during interactions with other characters in the story, but also in side activities you can participate in. From resting in hot springs or playing the flute, composing Haiku and following foxes to their shrine, Jin can gain power in many ways.
Iki Island introduces a new way for Jin to show his love of nature, as well as earn himself some new charms and a trophy, in the form of Animal Sanctuary. By freeing captured animals from the Mongol invaders and playing the flute to earn their trust and allowing you to pet the cute little creatures, you can get these unique upgrades. There are nine Animal Sanctuary in total, divided into three categories for each type of animal: three for cats, three for deer and three for monkeys. Here is where you can find them all.
The first group of animals that we are liberating from the Mongols are cats. By freeing at least two of the three Cat Animal Sanctuary, you’ll earn Nekoma’s Hunting Charm. With this buff, when you throw a kunai at an enemy while performing a chain assassination, your range will be extended. The more cat sanctuaries you free, the stronger the effect.
West of the Zasho . River
Right on the west bank of the Zasho River, and southwest of Sakai Fort, lies the easiest of the cat sanctuaries. Simply approach the kittens in the clearing and play the flute for them to complete.
East of Old Gambler’s Wood
Just east of Old Gambler’s Wood, and straight south from Kitsune’s Pond, is your next cat sanctuary. This one is guarded by more Mongols, so take them outside and play the flute to seduce the cats for a final upgrade to your charms.
North of Barrier Cove
The last is the reserve at the northeastern point of the map near Barrier Cove, however approaching it from Thunderhead Cliffs is a much safer route. Simply cross the bridge here and find the last group of cats to play with.
Deer are graceful creatures, but also very cautious and tend to run away when approached. However, finding all of the deer sanctuaries is well worth it to earn Sugaru’s Sight’s Bounty, which allows you to shoot up to three arrows at a time, which only gets stronger as you go. complete more sanctuaries.
Sly Hunter Forest
To the northwest, just south of the Sly Hunter Forest, is the first deer reserve guarded by a group of Mongols. You’ll spot them from their large bonfire, so get rid of them and befriend these graceful deer.
Zasho River Crossing
At the eastern end of the map, near the middle, the next herd of deer is on a small island inside the Zasho River just north of the Cloud Forest Temple. Cross the water, deal with the Mongol forces, and free these deer.
The ultimate deer animal sanctuary doesn’t have any wars. All you need to do is head to the far west of Gambler’s Wood, a little south of Fune’s Refuge, and play the flute for the ultimate enchantment upgrade.
Monkeys have a playful reputation and are very intelligent. However, these bright-faced monkeys can’t deal with the Mongols and will reward you with Mashira’s Protection Charm for rescuing them. At the northern end of the map, on a small island near Iki, is Raider’s Promontory. The Monkey Sanctuary is located on the east coast, untouched by the Mongols. Just take the journey and play a nice song for the monkeys.
South of Smuggler’s Wood
Your next stop is to head south from Smuggler’s Wood, along the waterfront to the south. There’s a whole Mongol camp at Saruiwa Overlook that you have to deal with, so prepare for a fight to complete this Animal Sanctuary.
Mountains in Saruiwa
The final sanctuary will require you to fully transform into a monkey to reach. All the way down the absolute southwest of Iki Island is a mountain in Saruiwa that you need to climb. Take your time climbing to the top and climb to the top, but once you do, you’ll be rewarded with some new monkey friends, a great view, and your ultimate charm upgrade.
