In God of WarTraveling between the many kingdoms of Norse mythology is an essential part of the game. However, the two kingdoms in the game are special: Muspelheim and Niflheim. Both locations are optional with some of the toughest challenges and best equipment in God of WarBut they do require some additional work to unlock. Now that the game has a brand new PlayStation 5 for improved performance, there’s no better time to revisit these areas.
To get to Muspelheim and Niflheim, Kratos’s son, Atreus, must first be able to read their language. For that to happen, you must find and complete two language ciphers, one for each field. The ciphers are divided into four pieces and hidden in special purple treasure chests throughout Midgard. This is the place to find all the pieces of both codes so you can go on your adventure to the flaming and misty realms of Muspelheim and Niflheim.
Code fragment 1: The forgotten cave
When you first arrive at the Lake of Nine, the search for your passcode will begin. Land at the Forgotten Caverns on the western side of the island, and pass through the rune-covered yellow Nornir chest. Look for a green brazier (part of a “Business in progress” Offer) and nearby you’ll find chains that you can climb. At the top, you’ll find the first cryptographic chest, marked with a strange and purple masking padlock.
Code fragment number 2: The Raven Cliff
The second section is at Crow’s Cliff, on the east side of the lake. Land on the dock and follow the path up to the giant corpse of the troll that died there. Go around the troll and you should find a place where you can raise Atreus up to a cliff above to ask him to kick down a chain for you. Climb up to find the purple chest.
Code fragment number 3: Tyr’s Temple Bridge and Vanaheim Tower
The third piece of the Muspelheim code is on the road leading to the Mountain when you leave Lake Nine. Take the grand bridge from Tyr Temple in the center of the lake to the Vanaheim Tower at the end. Inside, you will pass various poison-spray torches before falling into a cave-like area just outside the tower. Look to the left to find the third cipher chest.
Code number 4: Witch cave
You cannot get the last piece of the Muspelheim code until you meet Mimir. When that happens, the story will take you back to the Witch’s Cave, where you will enter from the lower water level of Lake Nine. When you reach the cave dock, take the elevator up to the main floor. Use a lightning arrow to break through the resin fence and go to the west wall, instead of going up the path leading to the house. You will find a chest inside a small stone structure with glowing green energy on it.
With the complete passcode you can now adventure to the flaming realm of Muspelheim and compete in its tough combat challenges. You should check out Muspelheim, at least a little, as soon as you spot it. Its uphill battles will earn you crafting materials for crafting some incredibly powerful Epic gear, but that one is especially useful in the middle. God of War. Wait too long, and the Muspelheim equipment will become obsolete by even more powerful things that you will discover later.
Code number 1: Ancient ruins
After Lake Nine is lowered for the second time, you will be able to visit a series of new locations around its shores. Head to the northern end of the lake to find the Ancient Ruins. Land on the beach and head inland to find the Frost Ancient patrolling the area. Just now it was the first secret chest.
Code number 2: Beach Tower Lookout
Find the beach on the east side of the Vanaheim Tower and land there after the water drops for the second time. You will see thorns on the beach stopping you from checking the right area where you landed. Look up and left to find a large wooden gear that you can spin with your ax. Hit it once to clear the spikes on your right, allowing you to cross the fence. You will then find the second cryptographic chest, but it will be surrounded by thorns. Press the spinner a second time – make sure you are not standing where the spikes protrude from the ground – and the spikes around the cipher chest will fall off, allowing you to open it.
Code 3: Mason’s channel
Go to the east side of the canal and find a beach near the tower. You will pass a chest covered with blue barriers, then find a wall that you can climb on. Continue, pass Realm Tear, and look down the street below. You will see a resin crystal of the World Tree, which you can blow up with one of Atreus’s lightning arrows to break the fence. Beyond it you will find a third cipher chest.
Stop! In addition to this point, this guide covers Spoilers unavoidable story! Don’t continue reading until you get to Helheim!
Code number 4: Peak of the mountain
The last part of your Niflheim code won’t be available until you’ve ventured to Helheim, and then made a trip back to the Mountain. When you reach the large room that used to be the mine you climbed for the first time, you clear some bugs and take the elevator. Once you reach the top, the path will take you through one of Sindri’s stores and back outside, where the chest awaits near Realm Tear.
With the last piece of the Niflheim code you will be able to access that Kingdom. It contained Ivaldi’s Workshop challenge, some of the hardest in God of WarAnd with it, some of the best equipment you can find in the game.
Now that you have both languages completed, Atreus can recite the names on the giant brazier torches on each Kingdom Tower in Lake Nine. Saying the names will light up the braziers and if you light them all, you’ll complete one of your Workers to gain experience and a special item to battle nine optional Valkyries across the Kingdom. .
Finally, mining the fourth Niflheim code opens the “Trilingual” trophy.
