Gambit tells you everything you need to know in the name. Destiny 2PvEvP game mode is all about managing risks to shoot against enemy teams. Unlike most multiplayer modes, you are not fighting head-on with your opponents but racing against them to take down a boss as quickly as possible. In here Destiny 2 Guide Gambit, we will show you how to die less, spend more and kill faster.

Before diving in, remember that you use your own device in Gambit, like it all Destiny 2 ′multiplayer mode. Hence, Gambit is far from balancing the newcomers. You can still play, even if you are brand new Destiny 2. However, you should be extra careful if you are just starting out, at least until you can get some better equipment.

Gambit 101: What is Gambit?

Gambit is a multiplayer mode that combines elements PvP and PvE (PvEvP). Two teams of four compete against each other on separate maps, defeating enemies in waves until the team can summon a Primeval. The first team to defeat their Primeval wins.

Summoning a Primeval requires sending 100 “motes” to the central bank. Every enemy you kill will drop at least one bacteria, but some enemies – especially high-value and elite targets – drop even more. The pups stay on the ground for a short period of time and you will automatically pick them up as you run past them.

Depending on the number of your banks, you will summon one of the three blockers on the enemy side, closing their banks until the block is defeated (we will look at specific blocking later) . The same goes for your bank when the enemy team’s bank inflicts, so keep that in mind.

The wrench in Gambit’s gears is an invasion. After banking 25 motes, a portal will appear allowing you or another player on your team to invade the enemy’s map for 30 seconds. There is a notification when you invade (and when you have been invaded), so the enemy team will know you are around. Before the Primeval period, the goal of the invasion was to destroy the enemies before they could destroy their enemies, to lose them forever.

After either Prime Minister has been summoned, the gate will open continuously after a short cooldown. This is where the enemy team really shines. If you infiltrate the enemy team while their Prime Minister is active, any opponents you kill will be healed, pushing the enemy team further to the finish line.

Communication is key

You can go far in Gambit just by communicating with your team. From coordinating banking efforts to dealing with invaders, being on the same page as your teammates is crucial.

It’s important to do things together, yes, but it’s also important to do things separately. Between invasions, invaders, blockers, banks and the attack wave, there’s a lot to do and it’s not a good idea to have everyone on your team doing the same thing at the same time. (unless killing Primeval). If there’s an invader or any blockers on your side, you should spend at least one person to deal with that.

Banking basics

You can only carry 15 motes at a time in a Gambit game and you shouldn’t be reaching that limit very often. While it’s tempting to wait to top up your bank, you want a steady stream of money flowing through your bank and you don’t want to waste any money. There are a few different ways you can make sure that happens.

First, the “wasteful” motes. Every five cards you reserve (up to 15) will appear a different stop on the opponent’s side. Five to nine offspring lays out a small mass, 10 to 14 a medium mass and 15 a large mass. Wasteful models show up when you bank less than five people at once or when you bank above the minimum requirement for the blocker you want to generate.

Ideally you want to divide the motes on your team by multiples of five – say, one player has 10 motes and the other three have five. This approach allows you to get the most out of your power.

Unfortunately, math rarely ranks so nicely. Absolutely, but please use this tip as a general guide, not a hard rule.

That raises the question of when you should bank, which really depends. Your default strategy should be to bank between waves of attacks, drop by your bank while you are on your way to the next wave.

If possible, coordinate when you drop off your vehicle with your teammates. If you can get the train running early, you can effectively lock the other team out of the bank, at least temporarily. That could mean everyone bank their own in an instant, or, if you’re a little more cunning, a slow drip bank that will constantly keep the opposing team captured first. Coordinating your banking efforts can really snowball a game in your favor.

As we get to the sequel, a lot of Gambit players before you spawn Primeval are trying to figure out what the enemy team is doing, which may change when you park your car. The point is here to avoid holding onto them for its sake.

Pay attention to the micro-ceiling

The micro counter at the beginning of each match Gambit provides a ton of information if you want to see it. There are three main things that it tells you: how many buttons the opposing team has, how many buttons the opposing team has but not funds, and how close the opponent team has to create the invading portal. Knowing all of that, you can make a lot of inference about what the enemy team is doing and what you can do against it.

Every Gambit match is different, but there are two common scenarios you will face. The first is a large number of motes with no banks from the opposing team. For one, that tells you that this might be a good time to hoard your warriors, stop the enemy team from their bank. It also tells you that blockers are coming, so maybe a good time to stay close to your bank.

The rest is when the opposing team has a lot of fighting. Without many motes there are no banks floating around, there is not much reason to intrude, even if the gate has spawned.

You can never be sure what the enemy team is doing unless you invade. However, if you pay attention to when the gate appeared, and the number of banks and no banks the opposing team has, you might have a pretty good idea.

Play it safe

If you die in Gambit, you will lose all your mothers. You don’t drop them, you don’t get them back if a teammate revives you and they don’t show up in the subsequent attacks. If you lose them, they’re gone forever, and in a tight and competitive game mode like Gambit, you can’t afford to lose any.

Unlike Strike where you can play harder, you’ll want to play everything safely in Gambit. Motes are only counted when you send them, so the number of attackers you beat and the number of Motes you picked up is of no value.

Playing it safe can have a number of things. For example, if you’re in the middle of a wave with enemies all around you on all sides, it’s probably not a good idea to run and pick up one. Likewise, you don’t want to start a new wave of 11, hopefully you can pick up a few more. Don’t be greedy, play safe stuff, and most of all, accumulate your finances.

Remember your mother with invaders

In Gambit you should keep an eye on an attacker and bank round unless there’s an aggressor or interceptor (and hopefully not both). Even though the invaders lasted only 30 seconds, that might be more than enough time to destroy your entire team. At least one person on your team should deal with the invader immediately. If they couldn’t win the battle, at least they could keep the invader busy for a while.

The person with the least mother in your group should go. Ideally they won’t. Similarly, if you are standing around with eight moes when the invader shows up, then this is a good time to run and hide.

The invader is just another guard, so you shouldn’t be afraid of them. That said, it’s important to remember what you lose. An invader can take up as much as the rest of their invasion. If you have multiple motes, you can lose more, so keep that in mind whenever an invader shows up.

Blockers are given priority

Just as you can snowball to your advantage by summoning multiple blockers towards your opponent, your opponent can spawn multiple blocking on your side. Even if you don’t need to bank, it’s important to be familiar with blocking methods. You don’t have to dedicate your entire team to dealing with them, but it’s best to have at least one person pick them up when they breed.

There are three different types of blocking:

  • Small blocker (five to nine motes) – Taken Goblin
  • Intercepting medium (10 to 14 motes) – Taken Captain
  • Big block set (15 motes) – Taken Knight

For the most part, each blocker is a little more difficult than the previous one. Goblins are easy enough for a player to cope in a few shots, while a Knight can feel like a sponge. Out of the three, Goblin is the one you want to pay attention to. Goblins can make other blockers immune to your attacks, so be sure to get rid of them before dealing with larger blockers.

Heavy bullets for invaders

You don’t start with any heavy ammo in Gambit. Instead, there’s a heavy shrapnel near your bank that will respawn after the cooldown during the round. Be sure to reserve this ammo for anyone who eventually invades the enemy side. Weapons that use heavy ammo are the most powerful in the game and you want your team to do their best when invading.

That said, communication is key here. It’s too bad to waste Heavy Ammo if the invader doesn’t use it, so make sure to talk to your party whenever the portal appears.

Don’t be comfortable

If you’re just learning Gambit, here’s probably the most important tip: Never feel comfortable. As any seasoned Gambit player knows all too well, matches can turn upside down in seconds, no matter what lead you are. This is especially true if your team has summoned Primeval while the other team is still banking. It’s easy to assume you’re ahead, but that’s not true.

With a well-coordinated team and the right combination of equipment and capabilities, a Primeval can fall in just seconds. The changeable combination between updates – in early 2021, The Lament was a popular boss weapon – but we are confident that whatever version you’re playing, there will be a way to get rid of Primeval near immediately.

For this tip, it’s important to keep that in mind. Gambit is a game mode that can snowball early, especially with coordinated banks and smart invasions. This is also a game mode that can snowball late after you’ve summoned Primeval. Even at home, make sure to maintain your DPS.
