Aloy is no stranger to picking up all sorts of random trash in Forbidden Horizon in the West. Whether it’s sticks and stones for crafting or ancient relics from the world before the robot uprising, you’ll stop at every step to retrieve anything else in the big open world. Collections are essentially mandatory for open world games, and the Horizon series continues to hide a bunch of these secret baubles all over the map in the sequel, but with variety and strains. kind of much more this time.
Aside from collectibles, easter eggs are another popular feature that developers like to hide in hidden corners of their open world. Sony’s first-party studios recently used easter eggs as a way to show a friendly nod to their sibling studios, such as Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart tells the story of Jak and Daxter and Sly Cooper through a secret weapon. Forbidden Horizon in the West is the latest major first-party release, and there are a few references to another major franchise in the form of three collectable War Totem Easter egg items.
There will be very minor spoilers here for what each War Totem is, and obviously where to find them, but they have nothing to do with the actual story or plot of the game. Forbidden Horizon in the West no. Also, unlike every other collectible in the game, War Totems are not marked on the map for you, but still unlock a unique reward for finding them all, which we will also share.
The first War Totem that we will collect is called the Totems of Brotherhood. This is the first one you can find in Forbidden Horizon in the West and in No Man’s Land. By going to the southwest end of the Sawtooth area, you’ll want to find a small overland bridge that leads to a small outcrop of rock. There will be a crashed machine to mark the location you are looking for. Aloy will comment that she should take a closer look, and comment on the hammer stuck in its head. You might get a few different lines here alluding to the hammer being the Norse mythological Mjolnir, but use your Focal point to mark a trail leading through the water. Follow it around the side of the small cliff to a small temple with the Totems of Brotherhood inside.
These are clear descriptions of the two dwarf brothers from God of War Help Kratos upgrade his weapons and equipment.
Next, we are following the Totem of War. You can guess who this totem will depict, but either way, this is where you need to track it down.
Starting at the Cliffwatch settlement, follow the road southeast of The Greenhouse location, winding down the steep path into the mountains. Take all steps back up a tree with a suspicious ax stuck in the trunk. Again, Aloy will mumble about it to tip you off. Increase your Concentration power to find the trail again and follow it up a nearby climbable cliff to the top. Keep going forward, sneak by some machines parked above, and around a wooden cabin. The roof extends to the left, sheltering the Totem of War.
Aloy correctly identifies it as “some kind of God of War”, clearly Kratos from the ax and the tattoo.
Our ultimate war totem is another obvious one, especially if you catch the trend and are known as the Totem of Youth. You can’t get to this one until you get to the Isle of Spiers. Once there, you’ll need to reach the far west coast, near where Snapmaws operates. While on the beach, look for a pair of palm trees, the big one and the other short, with a bunch of arrows stuck in them. Curious, Aloy will want to take a closer look. Activate your Focus again here to find some deeper paths into the island. It was a simple hike through the trees to a rusted bridge. Balancing on the railing is this ultimate Totem War.
With Atreus perfecting his collection, you’ve assembled the entire crew from God of War game, which will have its own sequel in the future.
In addition to some cool minifigures of these beloved characters, you can also unlock something for Aloy to use Forbidden Horizon in the West after collecting the whole set. It’s not much, but you do earn Mark of War Face Paint, which aims to recreate Kratos’ iconic look. Aloy’s face will be powdery white, with a prominent red line crossing over her left eye like the God of War himself.
