Square Enix introduced an extended gameplay trailer of Life is Strange: True Colors details how the player can control the emotions of unplayable characters. The trailer shows protagonist Alex using a psychic power known as Empathy to dig into the details of the characters’ lives, make judgmental decisions and dialogue, as well as witness the aftermath. the result of her actions. The game releases for PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X/S, PC, and Stadia on September 10, 2021.
Like the previous games in the series True color focus on dialogue choices that influence the story. Players must deal with the consequences of whatever they choose to say or do – and the choices are never easy. True color allows players to get a little more insight into their choices by expressing the unplayable character’s emotions in the form of a colorful aura surrounding them. The blue aura represents sadness, the red aura represents anger, and the purple aura represents fear.
Alex is able to interact with these auras using her Empathy powers. She can witness what triggers these emotions in a character, potentially revealing secrets along the way. In the trailer, Alex uses Empathy to reveal a secret that the unplayable character Mack wants to hide. In the ensuing confrontation between Mack and his girlfriend, the player can choose to reveal the secret, which could cost Mack’s relationship or keep it hidden.
Alex’s goal is to discover what really happened in her brother’s death. Players will be able to use the power of Empathy on multiple characters and their auras, learn more secrets, and even change their characters’ emotions to match Alex’s goals – or simply they feel better.
