With 32 NFL teams and some non-team-specific books, Madden 22 Players have a lot of options when it comes to choosing the best defensive playbook to run. However, the number of players moving from casual football fans to Bill Belicheck’s Madden 22. Your defense book selection changes based on how interested you are in defense. Here are the top five Defense playbooks in Madden 22.
All defensive books in Madden 22 comes with the same core plays and plans. You’ll notice the same man and region coverage along with some of the same blitz packages scattered all over the place. An average player can use any defensive book and, with the help of the coach’s suggestions, stop the foul from starting or scoring.
If you are looking for a way to increase protection Madden 22, it’s time to move away from the basic playstyles and start learning different ways of playing. The formation is related to the different defensive packs you are using on the field. When looking at the formation, you will see two or three numbers separated by dashes (3-4 or 4-3 or 3-3-5.) The first number represents the number of Linemen on the field. The second number represents the LBs and the third number represents the DBs (CB, FS, SS) in certain packages. So, in a 3-3-5 formation, you’ll have 3 rangers, 3 LBs and 5 DBs to make up your 11 man defence.
Let’s learn about these systems and what they mean to stop in Madden 22.
The 3-4 defense has three strikers and four LBs. Focusing on speed, you will find some stop errors in this diagram. 3-4 is great for stopping outruns, as you can shift your defense left or right, depending on where you believe the play will take place. Your defenders can also secure the pass in the Protected Area, but don’t rely on them to shield the speed receivers from person to person during passes.
As opposed to 3-4, 4-3 has four midfielders and three LBs and is best for runs in and blocking QBs. Your LE and RE are the stars of this squad, as they are responsible for sending an outside run towards your DT. However, with three defenders covering the midfield, you are more prone to overtaking, blocking and passing midfield in general.
3-4 and 4-3 make up just seven of the 11 players on the field. Those packages have four DBs (Two CBs, one FS and one SS). Nickel adds an additional CB to one of your LBs, allowing you to cover three WRs while keeping your subs on TE and backstage.
The Dime Pack puts six DBs on the field (4 CBs, one FS and one SS) and protects against all-out passing when fouled with four or five WRs. See what type of attack plan is impending and choose your defense accordingly. Understanding these packages is the foundation of protection in Madden 22.
Now that you have a solid grasp of defense plans, let’s dive into the best defense books to use. Madden 22 and how they use the above schemas differently.
Let’s start things off with the Super Bowl defending champions. Yes, Tampa Bay can thank Tom Brady for bringing the Bucs from worst to first, but that elite passing craze is what ultimately buried Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. So if your franchise or Ultimate Team has some speed defenders, Bucs Defense is a good book to run.
The Bucs playbook leans towards 3-4 and 4-4 formations, consisting of four people in line and four LBs. You’ll get some serious pressure on the opposing QBs in the 4-4 and will get the game going.
This playbook also features Wide and Willing 3-3-5 formations, which many Madden players consider the meta defense of last season. In Wide 3-3-5, two of your LBs will line up in line, with one being hung backwards to cover the center of the field. If you smell a run coming, you’ll want to stay in the Wide. Will keeps the midfield better defended and can also stop inside runs.
One trick you can use that works in 3-3-5 is to substitute SS or FS for one of your LBs, preferably your MLB. SS will be a user controlled player. SSs are faster than LBs, making it easier to cover the receiver, but they also put a punch on tackles, making them equally useful during runs. This works for any playbook that runs 3-3-5, not just Bucs. However, your substitution will be lost if you change to 3-3-5 Wide or Odd from the play selection screen. Once you’re on the field, you can hear a different lineup and keep the same staff.
The steel curtain will forever be the best defense the NFL has ever seen. For that reason, Madden players can always default to the Steelers defensive playstyle. The Steelers’ defense mainly operates with a 3-4 formation but also has a 46 formation. This stopping formation is a 4-3 game, with six players on the line. You’ll notice when you’re up against number 46, because the defense will be at their best and look like they’re jostling each other in a line of scenarios. Advice to the wise, don’t run after the shadow.
Steelers Defense also has another unique lineup, 1-5-5 Triple-A Gap. This lineup focuses on row with speed and play features that send another LB or DB flying by QB. 1-5-5 and Nickel Triple will keep 5-6 defenders in front, making them useful on the run.
With Aaron Rogers officially back on the team, the Green Bay Packers hope to make one game further than the 2020 season. They’ll need their defenses to strengthen if they want the best of Tom Brady and the Bucs this time around. They will do so mostly out of 3-4, but can fall into the so-called Quarterly Coverage range, which has seven DBs on the field for optimal pass protection. The quartet (or 1-3-7) will keep teams that cross the high line while also dialing in complex plays from either side of the front line. Your speed DBs can get to QB faster, especially on 3rd turns and long plays take time to develop.
In addition to the Dime lineup, you can also sub in LB Safety for extra speed and coverage in the middle of the field. You also have a few options in a 3-4 formation. Bottom and Top keep only three defenders right on the boundary of the scenario. Then the LBs line up left or right, depending on how the offense happened. The odd formation kept five defenders in front with two LBs in between. Swipe left or right to secure the running tracks outside, and leave if you think offense is coming inside.
We mentioned number 46 when we talked about Steelers, but you can run a purely defensive 46 playbook like the Multi-D playbook or 3-4 playbook. 46 takes what’s in the Pittsburg playbook and expands it with more 46 forms. Take 46 Normal as an example. In 46 Normal, you can use the Right Stick to choose how fast your packed from the forming screen. This helps you defend with pure speed, making it easy for you to pressurize, get on QB, chase out runs and stay in a tight man’s ring.
46 also features our favorite 3-3-5 formations, which can take advantage of a safe alternative for some extra speed in the LB position. Equip defense 46 to any team from Advanced settings menu before you click Ready. Here you can edit your offensive and defensive playbooks. In Ultimate Team, you will have to buy it from the auction house.
Danny Dimes must rely on his defense this year if the New York Giants plan to register an all-win record. Every great attack starts with a great defense and the Giants defense playbook is one of the best in Madden 22. This playbook gives you 3-4 and 4-3, all or favorite Nickel lineup and a unique lineup called Big Nickel.
Big Nickel registers another Safety for one of your CBs. So if you have a talented pair of SS or FS on your Ultimate Team, Big Nickel can bring them both into the field. You may have to replace them from the play screen, so practice with this playbook to see who enters and when. Then, adjust your squad accordingly from the My Teams screen.
The 4-3 in this book is limited to a 6-1 Even formation, keeping six players in scrims all the time.
