After being revealed during the recent Gamescom Opening Night show, what developer Firaxis has shown Marvel’s Midnight Sun will be like in action with a game reveal live stream. As it turns out, the game will share some DNA with the XCOM franchise, which is no surprise given that Firaxis is the developer behind the series’ modern titles. However, Marvel’s Midnight Sun will change the XCOM formula by introducing a deck-building mechanism.
Midnight sun will still let players move heroes across a battle map, but instead of an action economy, players must manage a set of skills their heroes can use. In addition to simple attacks, the cards will also allow players to power up heroes, debuff enemies, and launch special attacks and allies. Some cards will impact the environment – for example one will smash enemies through walls.
However, team attacks will depend on the player deciding which hero to use to carry out the mission. Midnight sunThe player’s character is The Hunter, a new hero that can be fully customized. During the missions, two other heroes from the Marvel universe, including The Avengers, The X-Men, and Marvel’s Runaways, can join the player.
To find the best pairs for heroes, players will be able to interact with them off-mission. In the game’s main hub area, The Abbey, players can chat with Marvel heroes and do short activities with them, like training or meditating. This center is also a place where players can upgrade their hero’s abilities, either at a smithy or on training school with Blade.
Marvel’s Midnight Sun There’s still no exact release date, but will launch in March 2022 on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC.
