Minecraft and Sonic the Hedgehog have come together for a new collaboration, starting today. To celebrate Sonic’s 30th anniversary, Minecraft players can play as the green hedgehog in a new DLC that recreates the spirit of the iconic franchise. Sonic Character Creator items are free to download on Minecraft Marketplace starting today.
The DLC features procedurally generated levels for players to increase their speed inspired by the Green Hills, Chemical Factory, and other popular Sonic the Hedgehog levels. The trailer shows the 3D levels, as well as the side scrolling levels. Sonic can be seen rolling into a ball and moving faster, and Knuckles is shown flying through the air. New Character Creation items seem to be more functional than the basic Minecraft skin.
According to the Minecraft Place, the levels are filled with rings to collect and bosses to fight. Players can also get their hands on Sonic skins, as well as skins for Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Shadow. Besides the playable characters, the DLC will also include iconic enemies and fan-favorite characters like Chao.
There will also be a two-week event hosted by The Hive, which will be filled with mini-games and full server hub takeovers. Tails’ biplane and Shadow’s motorcycle are featured in the trailer, hinting that players can ride these iconic vehicles. Hive promises that something special will happen one of the weekends and encourages players to check it out so they don’t miss out.
