Monark is a new Japanese role-playing game from the former developers of the hit classic Shin Megami Tensei series by Atlus. Introduced last week, the new title now has a trailer and lots of details released. Early 2022 release confirmed via release trailer and official website.
The game follows an unnamed protagonist in a mysterious school, Shin Mikado Academy, which is separated from the rest of the world by a barrier. There are many obstacles around the school, such as the fog that causes frenzy, cryptic phone calls from the “Other World” and the seven “Pactbearers” using the Daemonic Authority ruled by Egos.
To survive, players use their Daemonic power, the Power of Vanity, to control ego and madness. If this all sounds confusing then it means that the SMT style is working.
The gameplay of the game seems to be Shin Megami Tensei’s standard. Ego is an in-game experience system, used to enhance “sense of self” through a leveling map. Players can edit their attributes and attributes and the creatures’ attributes, similar to Persona or Demon in the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series.
The combat system is shifting from the usual standard turn-based JRPG formula of SMT and Persona to a strategic RPG style, similar to games like Fire Emblem. It has a “free movement system” that allows the player to move anywhere on the battlefield without being limited to certain spaces.
Players will not be able to freely use their Power’s Daemonic power, as each use increases your odds of insanity. To win the player will; need to choose strategically when to use their party member’s abilities.
The exploration portion of the game takes the player through Shin Mikado Academy, where they’ll search for phone calls that connect them to the Outer Worlds and solve puzzles.
The game features four companion characters with whom the player can increase their affinity, ala Persona. Like Shin Megami Tensei’s “Reason” characters, relationships with these different characters will lead to different endings.
The game certainly doesn’t try to hide its Shin Megami Tensei inspiration in the tone and mechanics at all. With Shin Megami Tensei 5 will obviously release soon, and it looks like fans of the series have a lot to look forward to.
Monark is set for release in early 2022.
