Followers of QAnon, the pro-Trump conspiracy theory, have spent weeks predicting that Wednesday will be the “Great Awakening” – a day, long heralded in QAnon’s prophecy, when Top Democrats will be arrested for running a global sex trafficking line and President Trump will hold a second term in office.
But when President Biden took office and Mr. Trump landed in Florida, with no mass arrests in sight, some believers struggled to harmonize the lies with their TV inauguration.
Some QAnon devotees have attempted to re-adjust their theories to accommodate Biden’s transfer of power. Several major QAnon groups discussed on Wednesday the possibility that they were wrong about Mr. Biden and that the upcoming president is indeed part of Mr Trump’s effort to bring down the globe.
“The more I think about it, the more I think it is possible that Biden will be the activator,” one account Written in the QAnon channel on the messaging app Telegram.
Others expressed anger at QAnon influencers, who told their followers to look forward to a dramatic climax on Inauguration Day.
A commentator in a QAnon chat room wrote: “A lot of journalists on YouTube just lost a lot of credibility.
Still others try to change goals and simply tell their co-workers to persevere and wait for the future unspecified developments.
An influencer QAnon wrote: “Don’t worry about what happens at 12pm. “See what happens then.”
And some seem to realize they’ve been scammed.
“It’s all over,” wrote a QAnon chat room participant, shortly after Mr. Biden’s oath.
“Wake up,” wrote another. “We had.”
Followers expect guidance from “Q”, users of a bulletin board nicknamed with a movement-boosting post, will certainly be disappointed. The account was silent for weeks and was not posted on Wednesday.
Ron Watkins, a key QAnon supporter whom some suspect is “Q”, posted a resignation announcement on his Telegram channel on Wednesday afternoon.
“We have an sworn new president and our responsibility as citizens to respect the Constitution,” he wrote. “As we enter the next administration, please remember all the friends and happy memories we have made together over the past few years.”
