E3 2021 is full of surprises, but nothing is as shocking as Redfall – a new cooperative shooter from Arkane Austin. No game was shown at launch, but we did get a beautiful CGI trailer that gave us a closer look at the terrifying world we’ll have to go through when it’s out. eye.
Much Redfall remains shrouded in mystery, but a few things can be gleaned from its announcement trailer. From release date and gameplay to multiplayer and available platforms, here’s what we know about Redfall.
Redfall no release date yet, but it has a release window. Expect to see Arkane’s game hit store shelves in the summer of 2022. Of course, game development continues to be affected by the ongoing pandemic and we wouldn’t be shocked if Redfall was finally delayed to 2023.
Revealed at the end of Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, it’s perhaps no surprise that Redfall is an Xbox exclusive. So far, the game has been confirmed for Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One and PC. Arkane is owned by Bethesda – the company was recently acquired by Xbox – so it’s unlikely the co-op game will appear on Sony or Nintendo consoles.
Redfall was announced at E3 2021 with a CGI trailer – and that’s currently the only trailer released by Arkane. It doesn’t show much, but it does show its main characters, along with some of the enemies we’ll be up against.
Arkane invoice Redfall as an open world co-op shooter. That sounds a lot like The remaining 4 people died, and it even has a versatile cast of characters to rival iconic shooters. So far, we’ve seen four major characters revealed, each with their own backgrounds, skills, and personalities.
- Devinder Crousley: A paranormal investigator and amateur cryptocurrency researcher, Crousley wants to find out what happened to Redfall and expose the truth to the world.
- Layla Ellison: After studying biomedical engineering at Redfall Technical College, Ellison interned at Aevum Therapeutics. Something seems to be wrong at the facility, though all she remembers is waking up with remote control powers.
- Remi de la Rosa: A combat engineer with a brilliant mind, Remi de la Rosa is accompanied by Bribon – her robotic ally – as she tries to save the town of Redfall.
- Jacob Boyer: A veteran of the war, Boyer joined Redfall as part of a private security operation. He now has a “mysterious vampire eye” and commands a spectral crow that does his every bidding.
Redfall will be playable as both a solo or co-op adventure, with players going head-to-head “against a legion of vampires who have overtaken the once quaint island town of Redfall. The game is said to take cues from other titles on the Arkane list – such as Prey and humiliation – so it will be curious to see how your actions shape the world around you and impact the battle every moment.
As far as actual gameplay, Redfall is an FPS, though each character brings their own unique set of skills and gear into battle. They’ll be customizable, as you’ll find ways to upgrade them as you play through each round. You will fight vampires as a result of a science experiment gone wrong, with some of them taking on different superpowers. For example, Angler – seen in the trailer – uses a psychic javelin to pull players away from their party, making them ready for further attacks.
Arkane says that each round will play out differently than the last, and that the team is focusing a lot on building a world you’ll want to explore. If Prey and humiliation is whatever will pass, expect a world brimming with mysteries to uncover and a book of lore unbelievably deep.
As far as we know, Redfall Cooperative multiplayer only for up to four players. It’s not clear if you’ll jump into the vampire’s shoes – similar to how The remaining 4 people died lets you catch up on its Infected – but we know its single-player and multiplayer modes will somehow come together.
From Redfall just announced, we don’t know much about the DLC plans – although it’s safe to say it will receive some form of post-launch support.
No retailers are currently accepting pre-orders for Redfall.
