Mercenary mode is significantly absent Resident Evil Biohazard after being included in every game since Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Thankfully, the newest installment of the franchise, Resident Evil Village, revived the fan-favorite mode. Mercenaries pits players against a swarm of enemies as they pay attention to the clock. The goal is to reach the highest possible rank on each map to unlock unique in-game rewards. Here’s how to unlock The Mercenaries in Resident Evil Village, along with some helpful strategies for getting a high score.
To unlock The Mercenaries in Resident Evil Village, you must defeat the campaign. You’ll then earn Completion Points or CP to spend in the Additional Content Store. Don’t worry, The Mercenaries only costs 200 CP and you’ll get an extra 30,000-40,000 when you complete your first level. You can now access The Mercenaries from the Bonus menu. It will be right at the top.
There are eight levels in The Mercenaries, starting with The Village, The Castle, The Factory and The Mad Village. Those four stages repeat with more difficulty and are called The Village II, The Castle II, etc. We’ll call them “four front” and “four back”. Spread around these stages will be golden duration orbs and blue ability orbs. These will play an important role in achieving high scores in The Mercenaries.
Before embarking on an adventure to destroy Lycan, you will purchase weapons, equipment, and upgrades from The Duke. Each mission has a set number of zones for the player to complete, and they will stop at The Duke between each location. Use your Lei wisely and make sure to upgrade your gun before returning. Save ammo, avoid damage and most importantly keep your combos alive. Let’s get into some of the more nuanced strategies.
All the possibilities and what they do
Look out for the blue ability orbs scattered around each area in The Mercenaries. Reach and interact with the orb to break it and gain new abilities. These are like perks or powers given to Ethan that will aid in his quest for SSS rank. Here is a list of all the abilities in The Mercenaries and what each ability does.
- Agility – Increases Speed
- All Brawn – Attack increased but speed decreased
- Adrenaline – HP recovers a bit when attacking with a gun
- Blade Master – Knife deals 5 times more damage
- Break Shot – Initial attack deals more damage when enemy’s HP is full
- Corpse Combustor – Enemies can explode when killed with a gun
- Fiddle Shooter – Increases attack when switching between enemies
- Gruesome Gourmet – Restores some HP when the enemy is defeated
- Healthy – Increases Max HP
- Infighter – Melee attacks deal more damage
- No Brainer – Headshots deal more damage
- Out of Reach – Ranged attacks deal more damage
- Pistol Master – Pistol deals more damage thương
- Shotgun Master – Increases the damage of shot guns
- Slow Motion – Enemy’s movement is reduced
- Thick Skin – Damage taken reduced
Additionally, you can unlock four other abilities by achieving an A rating in the four stages ahead. You can activate orbs on the go, and there’s even a tick for a quick spin before entering the skill selection screen. Those milliseconds add up quickly when trying to keep your combo alive.
While these first four stages are not a walk in the park, they are considerably easier than their level II stages. The best thing you can do is buy and upgrade sniper rifles. Before embarking on a new area, sell all your shotgun ammo and most of your shotgun ammo. Skilled players can afford to sell their first aid spray as well to earn more Lei.
Players who can achieve a B rank on each level will be permanently rewarded with 5,000 Lei bounty for that quest. To unlock new levels, you must achieve an A rating on the last level unlocked. For example, The Village is the first stage available. To unlock The Castle, you must reach rank A on The Village.
The rewards actually increase as you reach the S rank. Players can increase their score even further for the SS and SSS ranks. We will get those rewards later. An S rank in the first four stages will reward you with new abilities. They are:
- S Village Rank: Magic Magazine – Ammo capacity doubled
- Castle S level: Execution – Attack greatly increases when enemy’s health is below 30%
- S Factory Rank: Super Speed - Movement speed increased, but damage taken also decreased
- Mad Village’s S-Rated: Masamune – Knife attack is 10x stronger, but damage from other attacks is greatly reduced
To get to the S rank of the previous four levels in The Mercenaries, you’ll want to focus on upgrading your Sniper Rifle. Assuming you’ve achieved a B rank and received the Lei bonus, you can sell your shotgun ammo, shotgun ammo, and First Aid Spray for an extra 11,250 Lei, giving you a total of 51,250 Lei to spend. . Here’s how to spend it.
- Buy Sniper Rifle for 15,000 Lei
- Fire rate and maximum reload speed
- Upgrade the ammo base twice
We don’t worry about the Sniper Rifle’s firepower in these early stages as it will fire one shot per enemy. You’ll also start with 10 rounds in your pistol and find plenty of shotgun ammo along the way. However, you probably won’t need it.
Try your best to get more lives with sniper. Let the enemies line themselves up to kill two or three at a time. This will save precious ammo. Multiple kills will also help keep your combo alive and boost you up to 1.5x and 2x multipliers.
Remember the layout of the map and where the enemies appear. Mercenaries will spawn and activate enemies the same way every time, similar to Dark Souls. However, those enemies will still think for themselves and may not attack the same way every time. In addition to enemies, Time-Stamping Orbs and Abilities will spawn in the same location. However, the abilities will be random each time.
Remember enemies spawn to determine the best path through the level. You want to constantly run and shoot. Don’t feel pressured to kill every enemy in front of you as quickly as possible. Sweep in and out to expand your combos, grab orbs, and dodge damage.
Killing all enemies in an area gives you 50,000 bonus points to your score. You’ll hear the announcer say, “Great!” once the last enemy fell. Killing every enemy without breaking your combo will give you the best score possible. You’ll know you’ve done this when the announcer says, “That’s great!” Of course, the faster you can withdraw all of that, the better. You’ll get extra bonus points based on how much time you have left on the clock. The most important thing to remember before completing the zone is not to reload.
Once you’ve cleared an area, you’ll return to The Duke. Now is the time to upgrade your Sniper Rifle damage and buy the W870 Shotgun. Again, sell off your First Aid ammo and pistols. However, don’t sell all of your shotgun ammo. Save 10 to 15.
Upgrade your sniper’s ammo capacity to fill your current magazine. That’s why you can’t reload before going back to The Duke. It’s free ammo. If you can, upgrade your Ammo Capacity and Fire Rate on your new shotgun.
The Factory is by far the most challenging stage in The Mercenaries. The best thing you can do to get an S rating in the first Factory stage (which is different from what we mentioned above) is to memorize the location of the Sniper Ammo on the map. Just before entering The Foundry room at the top of Area 1, look to the left for ammo. Then, in the room where Propeller Head’s enemies appear, you’ll find more Sniper Ammo on the low maze-like walls.
The following four stages of The Mercenaries in Resident Evil VillageI overcome difficulties. Ethan will take more damage from incoming attacks, and he will be significantly disabled by the items the Duke has available. You will no longer have access to Sniper Rifle and Shotgun. You can buy Magnum and Grenade Launcher instead. However, the Magnum only comes with a small number of bullets and does not allow picking up or purchasing additional rings. Use them wisely. You can buy Explosive and Flashbang bullets, but with 50,000 Lei for the weapon itself, you’ll never make it past the first area.
You are required to lock down weak enemies with your pistol. Shoot thinner enemies in the leg to make them fall and then pick up their heads. If you fail to destroy, you should be able to escape and reposition. Stunting enemies is also a great way to deal damage, grab orbs and kill them to keep your combo alive.
For the Lycans, you have to score headers. They don’t stun as easily as skinny enemies when shot in the leg. Headshots will stagger them and sometimes make them fall backwards.
How to rank a Factory S (back four)
As mentioned, The Factory is the most challenging Mercenaries stage, and the following four stages demonstrate that. It’s hard enough to take out all the drilling enemies with a sniper; now you have to do it with your pistol or with a properly positioned magnum shot.
Do the following at The Duke before embarking on the first area of The Factory II:
- Selling 50 handgun bullets and 1 first aid spray
- Buy Magnum
- Upgrade your shotgun to LVL 4 . damage
- Maximize your Fire Speed
- Bringing reload speed to LVL 2
- Raise Ammo Base to LVL 2
Remember, you only have a limited number of scenes in Magnum and you’ll need at least three to take down Lady Dimitrescu’s daughters. However, you don’t have to kill every enemy in the following four levels to get an S rating. Preserve ammo, and once you’ve defeated the three daughters, put it to the finish line. As long as you’ve made a good combo beforehand, you’ll earn enough points from the first stage when combined with your time bonus.
When you return to Duke, sell the Magnum and buy a Grenade Launcher. Buy as many projectiles as possible. Use any remaining Lei to buy First Aid sprays and tube bombs if you want.
Try to use your pistol as much as you can in the Second Factory area. Use the Grenade Launcher to stun drilling enemies, then quickly switch to your pistol and shoot away their red cores.
Track your score and set it to the escape zone as soon as you’ve killed enough enemies. The time bonus will help you reach the desired score of 545,000.
In addition to unlocking more stages, abilities, and Bonus Lei, players can unlock a secret bonus in Resident Evil Village Mercenary mode. Of course, we are talking about the LZ Answerer melee weapon. To unlock the LZ Answer, you must achieve SS rank in all quests in The Mercenaries.
LZ is a lightsaber that will knock enemies out in the whole Resident Evil Village campaign. It is red and double-sided like Darth Maul’s iconic weapon. Once you’ve got the SS rank on all Mercenary maps, you can buy it for 70,000 CP from the bonus content store. Then while playing the campaign, buy it from Duke. The LZ answer is essential to completing the Knives Out challenge. Knives Out requires the player to complete the story using nothing but melee weapons, i.e. melee weapons.
