While it wasn’t shown during Xbox & Bethesda’s E3 Game Showcase at all, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 made a brief appearance in the Xbox Games Showcase Extended. However, video is displayed According to Tameem Antoniades, creative ninja team leader at Ninja Theory, not a trailer or gameplay reveal. Instead, it is a “build of the kind of work we did.”
Antoniades says that the game is still in development at Ninja Theory. “What we’re doing right now is building a good, decent part of the game before we move into full production to build the rest.” He went on to say that, despite its name, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 not a “direct sequel”, but “something more special”. The game will still follow the same character in a similar setting, ninth century Iceland.
The team at Ninja Theory have been flown to the country to photograph the land for in-game reproduction and are building costumes to scan into the game. Players should also expect some high-quality animation from the game, with Milena Juergens, Senua’s actress, having undergone two years of training. The game’s animators have also undergone combat training, to better understand the movements that come with swinging a sword or ax.
Although, today’s video shown at Xbox Games Showcase Extended doesn’t show any actual games, there are some snippets here or there of Senua walking around. On the other hand, it’s filled with sparsely shot fight scenes, along with beautiful visuals. The trailer already features a voiceover from Senua that might hint at the game’s story. The video ends with the line: “They may see them as gods, but we’ll show them what’s behind our eyes.”
