Ubisoft revealed a new entry in the Tom Clancy franchise today, and no, it’s not a new Splinter Cell game. Instead, it’s a new free-to-play first-person shooter titled Tom Clancy’s XDefiant. The game is currently still in development, but the closed beta should launch in early August.
Developed by Ubisoft San Francisco, Tom Clancy’s XDefiant is a “fast-paced gunfight against a mosh punk rock pit” according to the game’s executive producer Mark Rubin and the game’s creative director Jason Schroeder.
In Tom Clancy’s XDefiant, players will clash with personalized classes of characters, represented through different factions. Wolves make up the game’s tanks and equip large guns, as well as a circular shield that can absorb damage. The cleaner takes on the offensive role and can use the flamethrower. Support characters are suitable for the Echelon faction and come with SMGs and a set of goggles that allow them to see enemies through walls. Finally, healers are represented by Outcasts, who can create a healing aura around them. Each faction also has its own extra abilities and ultimate powers.
suitable for Tom Clancy’s XDefiant will be 6-v-6, and include both arena style and linear mode, with dominance and escort modes revealed in a press release. The game will also feature “a large pool of uniquely designed maps,” although it doesn’t say how many maps players will be able to expect after the game launches.
Release date for Tom Clancy’s XDefiant is yet to be revealed, but anyone interested can try to join one of the game’s betas. Players can sign up for the first beta of the game, scheduled for August 5, on its website.
