Despite being skipped during the opening ceremony of Blizzcon 2021, Blizzard has revealed a few details about Overwatch 2 in a separate live stream. Surprisingly in-depth preview showcases the game’s new system of heroic skills, stories, and quests.
Overwatch 2 was first revealed at Blizzcon 2019, though details have been sparse since then. During the demo, game director Jeff Kaplan confirmed the game was a full sequel, not a plug-in as some fans speculated.
The presentation dug into the sequel’s new talent system, allowing players to unlock and equip different abilities. Each character has their own individual skill tree complete with different talents that change their play style. For example, a build of Solider 76 allows the character to release a healing aura to knock other players off. Blizzard also shows various elemental abilities, like freezing and electrical powers.
Blizzard has given a closer look at the game’s new PvE hero missions. The missions can take place across all of the game’s multiplayer maps, and there are a number of fine-tuned variations that bring new enemies and mission types. This mode is a major part of the game’s progression system, as it grants players experience points. Blizzard says it plans to include hundreds of different in-game missions to keep the mode from getting bored.
Players have a quick glimpse of the gameplay of Sojourn, a new character revealed in 2019. The character uses a rail gun with a fast shot mode and a high-damage one-turn shot mode, reward players with high aiming skills.
The presentation revealed new maps, including New York and Rome, tweaks to the game’s balance, and more details about the game’s story. Blizzard says that the storyline will be more directly integrated into the game during this time, and players will get different dialogs depending on which heroes they receive in quests.
