When to decide on a replacement laptop and when to get it repaired

When your laptop doesn’t work as it should, you want the problem corrected as quickly as possible. While it’s true that repair shops can repair almost any type of problem the PC endures, it may not always be the best idea. Sometimes, replacing the laptop is the best option. Since laptops are cheap, we want to get our money’s worth out of the device, often times leading us to believe that a repair is always best. Before calling a repairman, there are a few things to first consider to determine which route is best.

Laptop 9-9-9

Before hiring a laptop repair specialist, determine the problem with the laptop if it’s possible. You don’t need a degree in computer repair to determine if the issue with your laptop is one with the power, perhaps a virus, or one of the dozens of other mishaps. This information can help determine if the problem is repairable or better off replaced.

New Laptop Costs

Experts at Consumer Reports say that if the repair costs are ⅓ of the amount of a compatible laptop, go ahead and replace the device rather than repair. It makes sense to invest your money where it’s best spent and a new device prevents future breakdown and repairs.

Laptop Age

Once a laptop surpasses the four-year mark, it’s time to consider replacing the device once problems occur. Some laptops won’t last this long, while others last longer. The model device that you own affects the longevity, however, outdated technology is often a concern after this time point. A laptop that is less than two years old is usually worth the repair costs.

Type of Problem

The more serious the problem with the laptop, the more reasonable replacing the laptop becomes. For example, if there is a problem with the laptop’s hard drive, a repair may not be the best option and may be more of a hassle than a help. Consider the type of issue the laptop to determine if it is best to repair or replace it.

Is There a Warranty?

Check out the warranty included with the laptop purchase or that you purchased separately. If it is still in effect, it may be a good idea to replace the laptop before it expires, especially when issues affect the performance of the device. Using the warranty included with the laptop can save a substantial amount of money, time, and frustrations.
